Monochromatic Globular Clusters as a Critical Test of Formation Models for the Dark Matter–deficient Galaxies NGC 1052-DF2 and NGC 1052-DF4

چکیده
Abstract It was recently proposed that the dark matter–deficient ultradiffuse galaxies DF2 and DF4 in NGC 1052 group could be products of a “bullet dwarf” collision between two gas-rich progenitor galaxies. In this model, formed at same time immediate aftermath collision, strong prediction is their globular clusters should have nearly identical stellar populations. Here we test by measuring accurate V 606 − I 814 colors from deep HST/ACS imaging. We find are extremely homogeneous. The mean color difference Δ DF2−DF4 = −0.003 ± 0.005 mag, observed scatter for combined sample 18 with M < −8.6 both σ obs 0.015 0.002 mag. After accounting observational uncertainties stochastic cluster-to-cluster variation number red giants, remaining σ intr = 0.008 − 0.006 + 0.005 Both an order magnitude smaller than other dwarf galaxies, infer bullet scenario passes important falsified it. No formation models predicted extreme uniformity themselves slightly redder clusters, consistent previously measured metallicity difference. Numerical simulations shown such differences expected scenario, as continued to self-enrich after clusters.

Keck Imaging of the Globular Cluster Systems in the Early – type Galaxies NGC 1052 and NGC 7332
The presence of two globular cluster subpopulations in early–type galaxies is now the norm rather than the exception. Here we present two more examples for which the host galaxy appears to have undergone a recent merger. Using multi–colour Keck imaging of NGC 1052 and NGC 7332 we find evidence for a bimodal globular cluster colour distribution in both galaxies, with roughly equal numbers of blu...
متن کاملNGC 1052 – A study of the pc - scale twin jet
We present results of a VLBA multi-frequency study of the pc-scale twin jet in NGC 1052. We observed this object at epoch 1998.99 with the VLBA at 5, 8.4, 22 and 43 GHz both in total and linearly polarized intensity. The spectral analysis confirms the necessity of a free-free absorbing medium, obscuring the innermost part of both jets. At 5 GHz we found a compact linearly polarized emission reg...
متن کاملEvolutionary History of the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 1052
We have obtained Keck spectra for 16 globular clusters (GCs) associated with the merger remnant elliptical NGC 1052, as well as a long-slit spectrum of the galaxy. We derive ages, metallicities and abundance ratios from simple stellar population models using the methods of Proctor & Sansom (2002), applied to extragalactic GCs for the first time. A number of GCs indicate the presence of strong b...
متن کاملThe shroud around the twin radio jets in NGC 1052
We discuss multiple Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) continuum and spectral line imaging observations and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope spectroscopy of the compact variable nuclear radio jet source in the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052. Absorption and emission signatures reveal ionised, atomic, and molecular components of the surrounding medium. Ten epochs of Very Long Baseline Array...
متن کاملDense Plasma Torus in the GPS Galaxy NGC 1052
We report results from nearly simultaneous pentachromatic VLBI observations towards a nearby GPS galaxy NGC 1052. The observations at 1.6 and 4.8 GHz with VSOP, and at 2.3, 8.4, and 15.4 GHz with VLBA, provide linear resolutions of ∼ 0.1 pc. Convex spectra of a double-sided jet imply that synchrotron emission is obscured through foreground cold dense plasma, in terms of free–free absorption (FF...
